Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb macaroni
  • 1.5 lb ground beef
  • 1 white onion diced
  • 2 cans whole stewed tomatoes 14.5 oz each, undrained
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 8 oz tomato juice adjusted as needed
  • 1 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • Hot sauce to taste
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Cook the macaroni according to the package directions until al dente.
  • While the macaroni is cooking, place the ground beef and diced onion in an extra-large skillet or Dutch oven.
  • Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally and breaking the beef apart, until the beef is fully browned and the onion is softened.
  • Drain any excess grease from the beef mixture.
  • Season the cooked beef and onion with garlic salt, chili powder, hot sauce, and fresh ground black pepper.
  • Stir well to distribute the seasonings evenly.
  • Place the undrained whole stewed tomatoes in a large bowl.
  • Mash the tomatoes with a potato masher until they are broken down but still slightly textured.
  • Add the mashed stewed tomatoes to the beef mixture.
  • Add the ketchup and stir until fully combined.
  • Drain the cooked macaroni.
  • Add the drained macaroni to the beef and tomato mixture.
  • Stir until the macaroni is evenly coated with the sauce.
  • Add tomato juice as needed to reach the desired consistency.
  • Taste and adjust the seasoning with additional garlic salt, chili powder, hot sauce, or black pepper, if necessary.
  • Simmer briefly over low heat until the goulash is heated through and the flavors are combined.
  • Serve warm.

Notes

To make this Old Fashioned Goulash gluten free, replace the regular macaroni with certified gluten-free elbow macaroni or another gluten-free pasta shape.
Cook the gluten-free pasta just until al dente, as gluten-free pasta can soften quickly when mixed with sauce.
