Peel the potatoes and slice them thinly and evenly to ensure they cook properly during baking.
Prepare the creamy garlic mixture.
In a bowl or measuring jug, combine the cream and/or milk with the crushed garlic. Season generously with salt and black pepper, then stir until well combined.
Begin layering the potatoes.
Place a thin, even layer of sliced potatoes over the base of an ovenproof baking dish.
Add cheese and cream mixture.
Sprinkle a portion of the grated cheese over the potato layer. Add spoonfuls of the creamy garlic mixture over the top.
Repeat the layers.
Continue layering the sliced potatoes, grated cheese, and creamy garlic mixture until all of the potatoes have been used.
Finish the top layer.
Ensure the final layer includes grated cheese so the top becomes golden during baking.
Bake the potato dish.
Transfer the dish to the preheated oven and bake for approximately 80 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown.
Check for doneness.
Insert a knife into the center of the bake. If it slides through the potatoes easily, the dish is fully cooked.
Rest before serving.
Remove the dish from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.
