Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Slice the sausage into 1/2-inch rounds.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the BBQ sauce and liquid smoke, if using.
Stir until the liquid smoke is evenly incorporated into the BBQ sauce.
Add the sliced sausage to the bowl.
Toss the sausage until all pieces are evenly coated with the BBQ sauce mixture.
Transfer the coated sausage to a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Spread the sausage into an even layer in the baking dish.
Sprinkle the light brown sugar evenly over the top of the sausage.
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven.
Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbling, sticky, and caramelized.
Remove the baking dish from the oven.
Allow the sausage to rest for a few minutes before serving.
Serve warm with rice, vegetables, potatoes, cornbread, or preferred side dishes.
